Because the Night - Part Three - The great concerts 88/99
Presentation by Claudio Bertini and Massimo Gramigni - Prg Florence
Third edition of Musart and third episode of "Because the night". After the eighties, started with the concert of Patti Smith in September '79 and illustrated in the exhibitions of 2016 and 2017, this year is the turn of the nineties, more precisely the period that goes from the concert of Dalla and Morandi in the square Santa Croce - July '88 - at the first concert of Vasco Rossi at the Stadium - June '99 - two watershed events in the minimum history of our work. The first marked the beginning of the 'theatrical' use of the most beautiful Tuscan squares (and perhaps this deserves an exhibition in its own right).

The concert of Dalla and Morandi in Piazza Santa Croce marked the beginning of the 'theatrical' use of the
the most beautiful Tuscan squares (and perhaps this deserves an exhibition in its own right). We had the task of designing the fittings for memorable concerts, including Lucio Dalla in Piazza del Campo, Fabrizio De André in Piazza dei Cavalieri, Gianni Morandi in Piazza dell'Anfiteatro, Pooh in the Castle Square of Monteriggioni, Francesco Guccini in piazza dei Priori, only
to mention the most important made outside of Florence. Alongside these are the displays of many Florentine squares, which until then had not been touched by the new musical wave (Piazza S. Croce, precisely with Dalla and Morandi, the churchyard of the Basilica of San Miniato with Franco Battiato etc ...). From the setting up of beautiful squares for a single concert to the idea of an exhibition
'semistabile' of only one square for a Festival the step is short, after all the idea of Musart comes from the experience of those years.
Vasco Rossi's was the first concert in which an Italian artist filled the entire Franchi, including the lawn, with his own fans, according to a liturgy that from then on would be repeated many times, protagonists Vasco (for another five times ) and after him Renato Zero, Baglioni,
Ligabue, Jovanotti and, more recently, Tiziano Ferro, thus definitively reopening the gates of the stadium, remained almost unused for the veto of politics and sport in the twenty years 79/99.
In the middle, as you see, of everything and more; we have chosen, as always, the concerts that seemed to us more significant, but also some to which we are in other respects. Unlike the first two editions, the photos of this exhibition refer almost exclusively to concerts organized by us. In fact, during the decade in question, some of the most active promoters in previous years ceased their activity and D'Alessandro & Galli moved their center of gravity mainly in the big Italian cities and in Versilia (the Lucca Summer Festival was born in 1998).
At the end of the same period there is also a new subject (Le Nozze di Figaro) destined to sign some of the most important concerts of the last twenty years.
Parallel to the evolution of the market and the tastes of the public, even the technique conditions the new decade. In the summer of 1988, the first electronic voucher was issued by the Florence Box Office (opened in via della Pergola in January 1986); it is not yet about the online sale and everything that will come later but it is definitely a significant step forward to make more
easy to buy tickets for concerts and adjust the offer to the ever increasing demand for live music.
But the technique also conditions and facilitates the work of the friends of Press Photo, to whom we must, as always, the majority of the photos shown here. From '98 the use of digital began to assert itself even in photography. The electronic memory of the computer is now added to the iron cabinets containing the negatives stored day after day.
But the eye and the experience are still the basic weapons to continue to document with skill and punctuality the life of the city and also our work.
Once again, thanks to them for their patience in archival research, which resulted in the exhibition that you can now see.
