These are some of the events of the 5th edition of "Genius Loci: discovering Santa Croce" , the festival which, from 20 to 24 September , will reveal to the public the monumental complex of Santa Croce, a symbol of national memory open to world (free admission with reservations required on the website www.santacroceopera.it ).

Santa Croce opens its doors to contemporaneity , and its secular spaces can be discovered or rediscovered in the light of the languages of music, culture and art, for an exclusive opportunity to experience them in an absolutely new and unusual way. The initiative, organized by Controradio Club , Opera di Santa Croce and Controradio in collaboration with the cultural association La Nottola Di Minerva , with the contribution of the Municipality of Florence for Summer Fiorentina 2022 and of the Metropolitan City of Florence , offers a rich program in a intimate atmosphere, in the most fascinating and significant scenarios of the monumental complex.

International names of music and culture will read and reinterpret the "spirit of the place" through performances, talks and concerts . Between the Basilica, the Last Supper, the Pazzi Chapel and the Cloisters artists, intellectuals and writers will meet with site specific events. The theme chosen for the new edition is "epiphany / apparition" , two words that at the same time recall the desire to return to live with wonder and emotion the relationship with art and the next celebration (2023) of the eight hundred years of the living nativity scene di Greccio wanted by Francis of Assisi to make everyone understand the mystery of Christianity .

Alessia Bettini, councilor for culture of the Municipality of Florence declares : "Genius Loci is now in its fifth edition, an event that has now become a point of reference in the Summer Florentine billboard: a truly unique festival for its ability to enhance such a special place, such as the complex of Santa Croce, through the most varied forms of art. Past and future, memory and contemporaneity, will dialogue through different artistic languages, concerts, performances, talks, in a very rich program. Thanks to Controradio and Opera di Santa Croce who, in collaboration with Nottola di Minerva, have managed to field such an avant-garde exhibition, an initiative we care very much about. It will be an opportunity for many, Florentines and non-Florentines, to rediscover an extraordinary cultural heritage ”.

"This new edition of Genius Loci is part of the new course undertaken by the Opera di Santa Croce, together with the Franciscan community and the owners of the monumental complex, for the development of a multi-year project that gives importance to the relationship between places and people , characterized by the strategic choice of living and letting everyone experience the monumental complex as an inhabited place open to encounter, where anyone can feel welcomed - explains Cristina Acidini, president of the Opera di Santa Croce - Genius Loci is an opportunity to live time and space in a special way, letting oneself be involved in the festival that enhances the extraordinary cultural heritage of which Santa Croce is a treasure chest and once again creates a bridge between memory and the future through the languages of music, culture and art enriched with further suggestions in these spaces of millenary charm, where spirituality and beauty are intertwined ”.

"Over the past four editions of Genius Loci - says Marco Imponale, general manager of Controradio - Controradio Club - more than 15,000 people have been able to participate in the shows, meetings and performances that the initiative, unique of its kind, has proposed. in the iconic and evocative spaces of Santa Croce. Since the first edition, one of the peculiarities of the project has been the creation of a double opportunity for cultural enrichment thanks to the use of high-level literary and artistic content and, at the same time, through the discovery or rediscovery of a place where history, art , culture and religious tradition come together in a unicum of emotions, the same ones that in the 19th century aroused the syndrome that bears his name in Stendhal. The Cenacle, the cloisters, the Pazzi Chapel and for the first time the Basilica, will be places to attend and live in harmony with the spirit of the place. The events proposed by Genius Loci therefore bring to life the contemporaneity of artistic expression in each edition and make us inhabit, even for just a few hours, a place where the past tells of our cultural roots, enriched by its inestimable beauty ".

The program in detail

On the streets of Francesco , on Sunday 18 September at 9.45 am , a literary and sound walk will be offered between spirituality, history and nature in the evocative woods of Vallombrosa with the Tuscan writer Paolo Ciampi , author of "The Ambassador of the Forests" (Arkadia) together with the singer Anna Maria Castelli . Steps, words, music to discover Vallombrosa and its teachings, along a circuit that connects in
stages the network of chapels that recall the life of the founding monk of the abbey of the same name San Giovanni Gualberto and his brothers. One morning traveling on a mountain where the lessons of the religious tree keepers and of George Perkins Marsh, the forest ambassador who first addressed the issue of climate change, are always alive. Organized by the La Nottola di Minerva Cultural Association in collaboration with the Vallombrosa - La Montagna di Firenze Association (meeting in front of the Vallombrosa Abbey, limited places, reservations by 15 September at the email club@controradio.it ).

The festival begins on Tuesday 20 September with the concert-event by Angelo Branduardi in the Basilica of Santa Croce, at 9.15 pm . Many of the most famous music of the minstrel of the Italian song draw inspiration from pieces of an ancient and often forgotten past, in a rediscovery of the national and European musical heritage that has merged into projects such as "Ancient future" of which eight volumes have been published to date. In harmony with the genius loci of Santa Croce, Branduardi will exceptionally reprise a series of songs contained in his album "L'infinamente piccolo" , within which he has set the story of St. Francis of Assisi to music . An intimate performance for voice and violin, accompanied by a grand piano, housed in the largest Franciscan basilica in the world .

It continues on Wednesday 21 September , this time in the Upper Room . At 7.30 pm the historian and medievalist Franco Cardini will talk with Father Giancarlo Corsini, rector of the basilica and guardian of the Franciscan Community of Santa Croce , Elzir Izzedin of the Islamic Community of Florence and with Filippo Tedeschi , deputy rabbi of the Jewish community of Florence in the talk "The epiphany of the divine " , on the trail of his essay" The abodes of God. Where the Eternal dwells "(Il Mulino): if God does not need a fixed abode, man has always needed to establish a place in which to meet him. Hence an excursus on how God proposed himself in the works of man, in architectural forms that are often lost or misunderstood, for a dramatic and intense journey towards the places of the eternal on a human scale. Moderated by Raffaele Palumbo, readings by Federica Miniati . At 9.15 pm it will be time for Anima_L , an artistic project by Linda Messerklinger with Luca "Vicio" Vicini (Subsonica) in which art, science and activism cooperate: the central idea is to revitalize the sense of communion of the human being with the environment that it surrounds it and the living species that inhabit it. To cultivate the awareness of the interdependence between Man, Nature and the Environment, sharing knowledge and actions to fortify and protect relationships, places and vital tissues on the planet.

On Thursday 22 September at 9.00 pm the Last Supper will host “The epiphany in nature. The epiphany of nature ” : a two-part show in which the writer Antonio Pascale will tell, retracing the story of a symbolic plant like wheat, how the human condition has changed; how we went from Pinocchio to Masterchef, from hunger to abundance and future scenarios . The philosopher and author Ilaria Gaspari will continue by delving into a specular theme: the human condition with respect to the perception of nature . From the myth of Demeter and Baubò, which frightens and makes you laugh, to this day: have we lost the sense of the sublime? With voice and readings by the singer-songwriter Letizia Fuochi . At 10.15 pm , again in the Cenacle , one of the greatest living trumpet players, Markus Stockhausen, in a trio with the right arm of Franco Battiato Lino Capra Vaccina and with Alireza Mortazavi , master of the ancient Persian instrument Santur, will face the metaphor of time through music, in a reflection on the abstract value of the future and on the most painful one linked to the past. In the Second Cloister at 9.15 pm “Gilgamesh” will be staged, the new show by Fossick Project , a duo made up of the illustrator Cecilia Valagussa and the musician Marta del Grandi . The artists will stage a contemporary form of shadow theater : a musical journey that tells stories inspired by the animal species and landscapes of the world, and invites the audience to reflect on man's relationship with nature.

At 10.15 pm, again in the Second Cloister, space for Petra Magoni's voice with “What are the clouds” . Passing emotions, like clouds, through the notes of Sinéad O'Connor, Fabrizio De André, Domenico Modugno, Joni Mitchell, Deep Purple, in a concert-tale where the sound of Ilaria Fantin 's archlute merges with the timbre unique by Magoni, creating an original synergy, always in the direction of the public. In the Pazzi Chapel, at 8.45pm. 9.45pm and 10.45pm , virtuosity and improvisation for the show by Evan Parker , one of the most influential saxophonists of all time . Parker was born in Bristol in 1944 and began playing the saxophone at the age of 14. He soon moved on to tenor and soprano following the example of John Coltrane, a source of inspiration from the very beginning. After a trip to New York and the encounter with the jazz current he decides to abandon his academic career to devote himself to music. He thus moved to London and became a frequent visitor to the Little Theater Club, the center of the emerging free jazz scene in the city. Here begins the career of Evan Parker which will lead him to important collaborations throughout Europe for over half a century.

And again: Friday 23 September at 8.45 pm, in the Cenacle, the historian Alessandro Vanoli starting from the publication "The Tale of the Seasons: the revelation and the time of return" (Il Mulino) will conduct a literary, historical and artistic journey in memory of Chiara Frugoni, recently deceased, great protagonist of the iconographic research on Francis of Assisi, deeply linked to Santa Croce and Genius Loci; with soundtracks by Ettore Bonafé . In the same location, at 22.00 Lello Analfino , frontman of the Sicilian band Tinturia, will present live "Punto ea capo" , a record characterized by modern, electronic and almost psychedelic sounds, which tells the artist's desire to open up to new horizons, in a constant search for new styles and sounds in the name of the desire to conquer the future by using the present as incipit. Two tributes are scheduled in the Second Cloister : at 9.00 pm "Of love and pride" , the concert dedicated to Billie Holiday and Nina Simone signed by Indaco Trio , alias Silvia Donati , (vocals), Camilla Missio (double bass), Francesca Bertazzo Hart (guitar). Two great musicians in comparison, two strong and sensitive personalities who have marked the history of jazz with their singing and their songs. Songs of “love and pride”: the pride of being a woman and an African American in a country at the time still in search of the most obvious civil rights. The trio retraces the most significant moments in the career of the two artists with a thin and enveloping sound. Bass vocals and guitar merge and bring themselves to light through original arrangements, giving the songs a new perspective. At 10.15 pm we continue with “Lucio, where are you going? The Dalla of the beginnings and the season with Roberto Roversi ” , an unpublished project by the singer and composer Costanza Alegiani who revisits some songs of the first part of Lucio Dalla's career and will tackle the vast chapter of the record production linked to the collaboration with the poet Roberto Roversi. Alegiani has at her side two permanent members of her Folkways Trio , namely saxophonist Marcello Allulli and double bass player Riccardo Gola . And again: in the evocative setting of the Pazzi Chapel the violinist Anais Drago will bring her “Solo violin recital” at 8.45 pm, 9.45 pm and 10.45 pm , a work that draws inspiration from literary texts, memories and reflections on contemporary life. Firmly linked to each other, although different from each other, the songs also reveal the numerous musical influences of Anais, who includes in her background experience of studying and performing classical and baroque music, folk, world music, pop, progressive rock , fusion and finally jazz.

As per tradition, the festival ends with the concert at dawn on Saturday 24th . festival bringing his “Santa Croce project - piano solo” to the Second Cloister at 6.00 in the morning . Author always linked to the less experimental currents of contemporary music, Mertens achieved great success starting from the second half of the Eighties when his compositions were used for theme songs, television programs and numerous soundtracks, including the films of Peter Greenaway and the plays by Jan Fabre. To his credit he has over 80 solo albums and performances in opera houses and other prestigious locations around the world.
