On September 29, 1975, Angelo Izzo, just twenty years old, helped by his peers Andrea Ghira and Gianni Guido, carried out one of the crimes that most deeply impressed themselves in the consciences of Italians. The crime of Circeo represents a watershed in the struggle for gender equality

Staged on Tuesday 17 and Wednesday 18 September at the Amphitheater of Villa Strozzi in Florence (9.30 pm), "Circeo, the massacre" tells that society and those tensions that reverberated in everyday life and that, with a game on the upside, they came to allow certain facts to happen.

Written by Filippo Renda and Elisa Casseri, "Circeo, the massacre" sees the actors Michele Di Giacomo, Alice Spisa, Arianna Primavera and Luca Mammoli. Directed by Filippo Renda.

Donatella Colasanti, the survivor of the massacre, who was only seventeen in 1975, was called all her life to retrace those facts, to answer the detailed questions of commentators, to interpret the new crimes of her torturers.

Donatella Colasanti tried in every way to leave that drama behind her: she changed her name and demanded the right to be forgotten, which however was denied because her duty to memory was more important. What is the border between duty to memory and the right to be forgotten? Does historicization justify that the lives of the victims become similar to a martyrdom?

Telling the Circeo massacre to try to understand what violence is, but without staging that specific violence or its protagonists: this was the premise that led to the writing of a text that, despite having its roots in the acts of one of the most famous judicial processes of this country, dramaturgically moves around another type of process, that of denial.

The idea is that Donatella Colasanti to defend herself against morbidity, from questions, from the reiteration of memories inside her head, imagine an almost story, almost like a photo story, of two young people in a seaside villa, on vacation, discussing, they joke, they fight, they love each other.

That is the main scene: an ordinary story, precisely, to tell how violence arrives in the life, in the body and in the minds of all of us, even when we deny ourselves that it is happening or that it has happened. The central point, in the writing of this text, has always been not violence in its extraordinary, when it manifests itself in monstrous events like that of Circeo, but its normalization within the everyday, where it mixes with the air we breathe until (almost) not to be seen anymore.

As part of the Florentine Summer 2019, produced by the Teatro delle Donne and Idiot Savant, in collaboration with Riccione Teatro, the DIG Association, the Archives Network for not forgetting, Corte Ospitale, Alchemico Tre.
