40 years of Musica dei Popoli

Since 1979 music, dances, rhythms, songs, melodies and traditions with over four thousand artists from the five continents. 44th edition starting on Friday 4 October with the Neapolitan folk of Enzo Avitabile. The review ends with the queen of African music Fatoumata Diawara.

The Sun Ra Arkestra, Bilal, Tinawaren and many others are among the big names ...

"This festival - comments the Councilor for Culture of the City of Florence Tommaso Sacchi - has always brought us into the ethnic sounds and musical styles of the whole world and has made Florence a pioneer of this kind internationally. We are happy to celebrate with the organizers this very important milestone, with the hope of continuing to surprise us and enhance the best of Italian music production and of the world that enrich the cultural offer of the city ".

40 years ago it was the first international festival of ethnic and folkloric music in Italy as well as one of the first ethno-music festivals in the world (the first edition of Peter Gabriel's famous WOMAD is from 1982). Today Musica dei Popoli is about to celebrate its 40th anniversary with 10 exceptional concerts in what has always been his home: the Auditorium Flog in Florence.

Now in its 44th edition - on some special occasions, in the 1980s, there were two editions a year, a summer and a winter one - the festival kicks off on Friday 4 October with the concert by Enzo Avitabile together with the Bottari di Portico . Symbol of the contamination between genres and absolute master of groove, Avitabile has a career full of successes and is always looking for a new sound, not only original, but vital and essential. On the stage barrels, vats, scythes, atypical instruments, directed by the patrol leader Carmine Romano, cadencers old processional rhythms that produce a real "folk" trance. An innovative proposal in which Avitabile fuses its sound with the tradition of these percussionists, whose origins date back to the 13th century. The Oscar-winning director, Jonathan Demme, has dedicated a documentary title to the Neapolitan musician, “Enzo Avitabile Music Life” .

In the second appointment, scheduled for Friday 11 October , the Orchestra dei Braccianti takes over the stage of the Flog: different men and cultures that the magic of music transforms into an orchestra of 18 elements from 9 different countries: Italy, France, Gambia, Ghana , Nigeria, Libya, Tunisia, India and the United States. Among them are young people who have experienced the drama of migration and who today live in ghettos or in the countryside. A group able to pass from the songs of the South to the African music, from Jamaican rhythms to the metropolitan rap. The project was born from the spark struck between some musicians traveling in the South and the Terra! Project, a non-profit organization that deals with the environment, agriculture and the fight against illegal hiring. Thanks to the artistic director, as well as voice and guitar of the Orchestra, Alessandro Nosenzo it was possible to create this mix of emerging and consolidated talents with the mission of translating into music themes with a strong social impact.

A fantastic soul voice and a dramatic story behind it made of escapes, arrests, torture, but also redemption. It is that of JPBimeni , who escaped from Burundi and then settled in London. Here he embraces the infinite musical possibilities that the city offers: jam session with the band of Roots Manuva, open mic evenings with the Noiettes and a meeting with an Adele at that time a teenager. It is music that offers him a respite and gives him respite in those days when Bimeni, alone, resumes his life in the UK: "In Wales for the first time I bought music, collections of Ray Charles, Otis Redding, Bob Marley and Marvin Gaye ”, all artists who inspire his songs. The artist will perform at the Flog Auditorium on Saturday 12 October , with his soul band JP Bimeni & The Black Belts.

Thursday 17 October is the moment for ambassadors of folk and Sufi music of Rajasthan: the Barmer Boys , the new generation of artists that perpetuates the ancient musical tradition of the Manganyar, whose songs are handed down from generation to generation. Stories of ancient exploits of condottieri or maharajah, music for religious rituals, love songs. The group was formed in 2011 and throughout its career it has existed in India, Asia, North America and Europe. Their international debut was at the Roskilde Festival in 2014, where they played before The Rolling Stones.

For the 40th anniversary of the Festival, Sun Ra Arkestra returns to perform on the stage of the Auditorium with one of the best new talents in international jazz: saxophonist James Brandon Lewis and his group James Brandon Lewis 5th ( Friday 25 October ). Spearhead of the new African American scene between avant-garde, jazz, soul and funk, Lewis gives a personal and engaging reading of the soul of black music of the last 30 years, outside conventional schemes and labels. Following the concert of L'Arkestra by Sun Ra which was in concert at Musica dei Popoli in 1986, the year of the legendary "Americamusica" edition, in a memorable performance in the Salone dei 500 at Palazzo Vecchio. In that edition of Musica dei Popoli there were among others Sonny Rollins, Herbie Hancock, Lester Bowie, Max Roach, and Steve Lacy. A series of crazy concerts.

Saturday 26 October is the night dedicated to Ethiopiques: the legendary Girma Bèyènè with the Akalé Wubé . After 25 years of silence the legend of Ethiopian music has accepted the invitation of the French group Akalé Wubé to return to perform. Together they created "Ethiopiques vol.30", an album that cleverly combines orchestral plans with solar and romantic melodies, in which Bèyènè is the protagonist with his piano improvisation.

Established organic in the European World Music circuit, from Ulan Bator, the capital of Mongolia, the Egschiglens arrive on Friday , November 1 , creators of an exceptional sound that combines tradition with innovative elements: a spectacle of sounds and colors. Theirs is a vast repertoire of traditional hatred of the Altai mountains, dances and songs of northern Mongolia, original songs and references of pop songs adapted to their particular style. All this is repeated with the use of a large number of traditional instruments, (above all the morin khuur, a two-stringed violin, and the yatag, a sort of cimbalon or zither with metal strings) for a highly respected organic that enhances the splendid and magical voices in khoomi style.

From the cold Mongolia to the scorching sands of the desert of Mali with the blues touareg of the Tinawarens , Saturday 9 November . Their music tells of nostalgia for the homeland, the violence of war and resistance with a spiritual emphasis. During their last 12-day road trip in North Africa, across the Sahel to the capital of Mauritania, they improvised each evening around the fire in front of "an audience of scorpions". From this experience the album Amadjar (foreign traveler) was born, with tracks recorded under the stars without headphones or effects. Among their most illustrious fans are Robert Plant, Thom Yorke (Radiohead), Elvis Costello, Brian Eno, Carlos Santana, Damon Albarn (Blur), Chris Martin (Coldplay) and TV On The Radio.

Bilal Sayeed Oliver, known simply as Bilal , is one of the most dynamic artists of our time. An eclectic figure, able to pass from gospel to jazz, from soul to blues up to the more modern hip-hop. Born in Philadelphia, he began his musical career in New York during university, but music has always been part of his life first through his country's religious congregation and then by attending some jazz clubs with his father. He has worked with Dr. Dre, J Dilla, QuestLove, The Roots, Kendrick Lamar and many others. The American musician will perform on the Flog stage on Thursday 14 November .

The 44th edition of Musica dei Popoli ends with the queen of African music Fatoumata Diawara ( Thursday 28 November ). The Malian guitarist, composer and actress performed this summer at Glastonbury, one of the most important festivals in Europe.
Fatoumata is one of the most intense voices in the international world music scene and does not accept ideological compromises, nor does it resort to narrations in the third person in dealing with rather thorny and painful subjects of great social and political topicality.
Among his many summer participations also that at Jovanotti's Jova Beach Party. The Malian artist, celebrated all over the world, recently met Gorillaz leader Damon Albarn with whom he is collaborating on a new project.

The 2019 edition of Musica dei Popoli is supported by the Municipality of Florence, the Tuscany Region and the Metropolitan City of Florence.
