Cinema under the stars 2020
Mandela Forum - Enrico Berlinguer square - Florence
We return to the cinema, under the stars. From Thursday 18 June the Arenas of Mars reopen, the two summer rooms of the Nelson Mandela Forum in Florence that have been welcoming the Florentine public and beyond for almost thirty years.
Until September, every night, two films: the hits of the season arrive in the Arena Grande, from "Parasite" to the new Woody Allen film "A rainy day in New York", and many films that in this lockdown period are go to the web: "Coming back" by Cristina Comencini, "Favolacce" by the D'Innocenzo brothers, "I Miserabili" by Ladj Ly, "Matthias & Maxime" by Xavier Dolan.
The Arena Piccola screen is dedicated to arthouse cinema: "God is a woman and his name is Petrunya", "The mystery Henri Pick", "Marie Curie" among the proposals, together with the two retrospectives dedicated to Federico Fellini and Agnès Varda , in addition to the restored versions of cult films such as "Caravaggio" by Derek Jarman and "Crash" by David Cronenberg.
Great attention to security measures in Covid times. In this sense, the collaboration of the spectators is fundamental. The Arenas of Mars can be accessed with the mask avoiding gatherings (in line at the checkout as in the supermarket), once in place the mask can be removed. At the entrance you must leave your data and a telephone number. To speed up this operation, it is possible to download the pre-printed model from the site www.mandelaforum.it and deliver it already filled in at the entrance.
The ticket price remains unchanged: 5 euros full, loyalty card with a gift every 5 entrances for Unicoop Firenze members. Advance purchase is recommended on the site www.mandelaforum.it . Seats, numbered, are assigned at the time of purchase. The sessions respect social distancing, with the possibility of sitting next to the members of the same family or cohabitants.
The starting time of the screenings - Arena Grande 21.30, Arena Piccola 21.45 - is staggered to avoid gatherings. Information and details are available on the website www.mandelaforum.it and by telephone on 055 678 841.
It starts on Thursday 18 June in the Arena Grande with "La belle époque", a poignant and fun comedy by Nicolas Bedos with Fanny Ardant and Daniel Auteuil, while in the Arena Piccola there is "Anthropocene - The human age", an extraordinary documentary by Jennifer Baichwal, Edward Burtynsky and Nicholas de Pencier on the impact of human activities on our planet.
On July 18, as usual for Mandela Day, a film that deals with the theme of human rights, which this year could not be dedicated to the Black Lives Matter movement, with the revival of "What to do when the world is in flames "on the condition of the blacks of America.
In the program two fascinating musical tributes - to Leonard Cohen and his muse Marianne Ihlen and the concert of Fabrizio De Andrè with PFM; on the wave of the Oscar winner also Memoirs of a murderer of Bong Jon Hoo; the art of Caravaggio in the super classic of Derek Jarman, recently restored and for the hundred years since the birth of Fellini "Amarcord", "I vitelloni", "Otto e mezzo" and other his masterpieces.
A moving tribute to the fascinating figure of Agnes Varda, who recently passed away, with the revival of the exciting "Visages Villages" and a new documentary-interview and two of his historical films.
The "Cinema under the stars" of the Mandela Forum continues until September and remains open throughout August.
The programming is signed by Stefano Stefani. Events, meetings with the authors and previews are curated by Michele Crocchiola. In collaboration with the Niels Stensen Cultural Foundation, within the Florentine Summer promoted by the Municipality of Florence.
