A love story and politics that has marked contemporary history. The story of an ordinary power couple, Nicolae Ceausescu and Elena Petrescu, who has brought Romania to its knees for over twenty years.
Scheduled for Friday, March 15th at the Arts Theater in Lastra a Signa (Florence - 9 pm), "The Spouses - Roman Tragedy" is the show with which Elvira Frosini and Daniele Timpano outline the most sinister among the tyrants of the countries of the communist bloc and his wife.
Capricious and bloody dictators, for over twenty years these Macbeth and Lady Macbeth of the Balkans have sown fear in the Romanian people and then ended up summarily executed in front of the cameras, under the eyes of the world, on December 25, 1989.
The show is taken from the text of the French playwright David Lescot (translation Attilio Scarpellini), who writes: "A man and a woman. Very ordinary people in 20th century Romania. Both come from the countryside. In the same way, both of them find themselves in the military in the Communist Party. Nothing seems to distinguish them from their companions. Except that they are a little less gifted than the average. They are creatures without enamel in a world without a horizon ”.
"What do we know about Nicolae Ceausescu and Elena Petrescu? What do we know about Romania? Since 1989, the year of the fall of the Wall and the fall of the Ceaucescus, the narrative we heard was that of two capricious and bloody communist dictators - explain Elvira Frosini and Daniele Timpano in the director's notes - who have sown terror in the Romanian people, sinister and exaggerated tyrants who have reduced their country to their knees for over twenty years The text by David Lescot starts exactly from this image.
The Spouses | romanian tragedy is the story of an ordinary power couple: both come from the countryside, find themselves in the Communist Party, nothing seems to distinguish them from their comrades, except that they are a little less gifted than the average. Creatures without enamel in a world without horizon. The author underlines the mediocrity, the grotesque and the absurd, until the tragic and ambiguous end: the summary process and the shooting in front of the cameras, under the eyes of the world, December 25, 1989. A Cartesian dramaturgy, with a reversal final and a sufficiently ambiguous beginning to leave space for two authors and actors like us for a further critical reading. Were they as they told them to us? What happened to Communism? And what was the fate of Romania after their fall? We have tried to please these two characters, who are described as two cynical tyrants exalted by the delirium of omnipotence but also as two ordinary pensioners, two poor figures who are also a bit tender and helpless, towards whom one could not try an impossible empathy. We then tried to work on a balance between distance and closeness, and to embed the ambiguity in all the scenic construction, disseminating small critical cracks that could trigger questions on this monolithic narrative - that of the capitalist, democratic and triumphant West - and on we who today are part of it ”.
Elvira Frosini and Daniele Timpano are authors, directors and actors who deconstruct the narratives of history, analyzing society starting from the many references that constitute contemporary imagery and consciousness. "Our dialogue with the public is based on what we share here today: the same hypocrisy, the same clichés, the same fears." Among the awards we remember the Ubu Award nominations for best dramaturgy, obtained in 2012 with "Aldo dead "and in 2017 with" Acqua di colonia ".
