THE POWER OF LYRIC
By Emanuela Agostini
Directed by Gianfranco Pedullà
Enrico Caruso bought it in the early twentieth century, for the charm, the centuries-old history and the priceless panorama it offered. Villa Caruso Bellosguardo in Lastra a Signa - now home to the museum dedicated to the great tenor and pole of cultural activities - holds memories, vicissitudes and anecdotes of one of the most famous Italian artists of all time.
And it is starting from the rooms of Villa Caruso that the show “Enrico Caruso, the power of lyric” traces, outside any rhetoric, the life of the phenomenal tenor. Staged on Saturday 31st, Sunday 1st and Tuesday 3rd August (9pm) right in the garden of Villa Caruso in Bellosguardo, the show written by Emanuela Agostini and directed by Gianfranco Pedullà of the Popular Art Theater uses different languages ranging from acting to music , mostly live, from the projections on the walls of the Italian garden to sophisticated lighting systems.
The rooms of the Villa thus tell the private life and musical genius of Caruso. The plot focuses on the Villa staff appearing to the public in turmoil: the great tenor is about to arrive.
The private events of the Caruso family are intertwined with the narrative with the artistic successes of Caruso, whose announced arrival only increases curiosity about his extraordinary artistic and human biography. Meanwhile, behind closed doors, the artist's domestic drama unfolds, abandoned by his beloved woman, Ada Giachetti, who fled to Nice with the driver. Removed from the view of the spectators, but still very much present, also thanks to the engravings of his voice, we reach the final period of his life when Enrico Caruso becomes a myth. His image will eventually appear in the distance… a gramophone will give us back his voice.
Presented on the centenary of the death of Enrico Caruso, the show "Enrico Caruso, the power of opera" stars the actors Marco Natalucci, Roberto Caccavo, Marilena Manfredi, Fausto Berti, Eleonora La Pegna, Anita Donzellotti, Matteo Zoppi, Matteo Ferraioli, Edoardo Buresta, Vincenzo Infantino. Original music by Francesco Giorgi performed live. The students of the Higher Technical Institute of Fashion in Scandicci collaborated in the creation of the costumes.
